Doctor Who 45th Anniversary – Why Was 1963 Brilliant?
Need you ask? It all begins on 23rd November 1963; several brilliant people invent “the best idea ever invented in the history of the world” ((c) Russell T Davies) and Verity Lambert puts it on TV with the impossibly brilliant William Hartnell as the Doctor. The weird, alienating Pilot episode’s awesome, The Daleks and their world look fantastic… But really, there’s only one choice for why 1963’s Doctor Who is brilliant. They nail it from the very beginning.
Now, if you want to buy it… You might be able to find a second-hand copy of Terrance Dicks’ rather jolly novelisation, or of the two releases on VHS (and two more of the Pilot version of the first episode), but really, you should pick up the marvellously cleaned up and extras-filled DVD box set, Doctor Who – The Beginning, possibly the most indispensable release in the range. As a bonus, it has two more stories and a taste of another on it, too.
An Unearthly Child
“Have you ever thought what it’s like to be wanderers in the fourth dimension? Have you? To be exiles?”Two teachers investigate a strange old man’s granddaughter – their lives, and ours, are never the same again. They fall into the TARDIS and into history (quite literally, with cavemen). And the very first episode is still perhaps the greatest single piece of television ever made. Seriously.

Happy WhoDay, sweetie.
* hug *
Of course, ONE of the best things about Doctor Who is that it (famously) made you a Liberal, without which I would never have experienced the joys of Richard 'n' Alex hugs at Conference :D

Awwhh, thank you!
And, in a later year, it's responsible for "Richard 'n' Alex", too :D
There'll be more of these, you know. But in the meantime, I must go on getting ready; we're having a bit of a do, hopefully, given that there are engineering works closing our local lines and snow out of the window!

Awwhh, thank you! I’m afraid you’ll have to wait a bit for 1993, though – it will come, if perhaps not mentioning the telly, as my aim’s only to be positive in these ;-) – as my plan’s to do one year a day until the end of the year. As I’m starting today, though, for one day only I’m playing catchup.
I’ve also set myself several rules (apart from ‘only say nice things’), partly as a challenge and partly because otherwise I’ll just flounder all over the place. So if you spot any of them on your bingo card, call out.
